Discover the striking sights of Connemara

Kylemore Abbey

Connemara is a breath-taking region that is strongly associated with traditional Irish culture. A trip from Galway to the sights of Connemara will take you through the Irish-speaking town of An Spidéal, past the Maamturk mountains and the Twelve Bens, and into Connemara National Park.

Kylemore Abbey is one of the main highlights of the Connemara region. You can tour the ground floor of this fairy tale castle; the rest of the Abbey is a private residence for the order of nuns that look after it. On the castle grounds, you can explore the beautiful Gothic church and the amazing walled gardens.

Further on, you can stop at Killary Fjord, Ireland’s only fjord as well as the town of Leenane which is situated at the head of Killary harbour, the 16km Fjord. Leenane nestles under the Maamtrasna and Maamturk mountains on the Galway-Mayo border.

Killary Fjord Boat Tours Take a 90 minute trip on the large modern boat for uninterrupted views of the spectacular scenery on Killary Fjord. The inlet boasts some of the finest scenery in the West of Ireland and because of its sheltered nature, the waters are always calm. Frequent dolphin sightings (not guaranteed). It’s an enjoyable trip for all ages and interests.

Journey onto the village of Cong where the 1952 Oscar-winning movie, The Quiet Man, starring Maureen O’Hara and John Wayne, was filmed. Don’t miss the boat trip on the crystal waters of Lough Corrib. And while in Cong, you can even stand in two counties at once!
